Our Shared Past: Highlight on Jonathan Shepard

Feb

Written by Nicole Gaudier

Jonathan Shepard‘s Mixed media installation  Particles will be in the Our Shared Past exhibition, on view in the Stein Gallery from December 17, 2013 to May 25, 2014.

A statement from the artist:

“What has always drawn me to photographs, moving or still, is the encapsulation of so many simultaneous events, emotions, and the engagement of all my the senses in one crystalized flicker of light.  From my earliest memory, my father proudly presented slide shows on the wall of our dining room, surrounded by adult guests whom I would never remember later, enjoying cups of coffee and my mom’s swedish tea ring pastry.  Today when I recall those memories, I can smell the pastry in my mind. My recollection of those shared experiences has almost nothing to do with the subjects in the photos, but my own nostalgia is formed by the experience of a collection of people connecting to each other’s stories through the shared observation of a moment.  I believe we are all connected by these particles of light, experience and memory in an effort to preserve our own stories if only as they are reflected by those of someone else.”

There will be artist appearances at the Stein Gallery January through April. Each Saturday, artists from the exhibition will be in the Gallery from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.  Others will make appearances throughout the day on Weaver Free Saturdays, and on Tuesday evenings during the exhibition.
