Gardener’s Corner: Rosa Ausboard

Oct

09

Jekyll Rose 1Rosa Ausboard are also known as Rosa Gertrude Jekyll, David Austin roses, or Austin roses. Despite its many names, these roses are not incredibly prickly when it comes to care and maintenance.

Regular watering accompanied by direct sunlight are the standard. Rosa Ausboard prefers neutral to slightly acidic pH. They will establish roots in well drained sand or loam. As with most gardens, summer mulch discourages weeds,  cools roots, and aids in the retention of soil moisture. During the active growth season from spring to fall, blooms will repeat, however you must be sure to remove spent flowers to encourage additional blooming. Rosa Ausboard is susceptible to standard rose diseases and pests, including and not limited to black spot, powdery mildew, aphids, and rose midges. Full sun exposure discourages the diseases and pest, but it may be necessary to apply a preventative fungicide during the active season. During the dormant winter season, prune as needed and protect from extreme cold and frost.
