Lecture with Professor Jack E. Davis

Nov

Written by Jennifer Corrente, Education Intern

Please join us as Jack E. Davis, Professor of History at the University of Florida, will be at The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens on November 8, 2011 presenting on his book, An Everglades Providence: Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the American Environmental Century.  Lecture is scheduled from 7:00-8:00pm in the Auditorium.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas was a strong proponent for the preservation of the Everglades. She even wrote her own book on the topic in 1947. Her work in natural history was very influential.  During the same year in which her book was published President Harry Truman designated the Everglades as a national park. I am quite sure that Mr. President must have read it.

Jack E. Davis’ book explores the 80 year relationship Marjory had with the Everglades, in which she fought for its protection and preservation. Through this examination of Douglas and the Everglades, Davis’ book discusses the topics of nature protection and its feminization, nature as a historical agent, specifically in South Florida, and the science of ecology and how it has influence on environmental awareness.  After his lecture, Jack E. Davis will be conducting a book signing.
